September 11 memorial monument Vandals defaced an Emmett memorial dedicated to the victims of the September 11 attacks on February 19, 2003.

Members of American Legion Post 49 organized the original monument effort for the top of Freezeout Hill in Emmett, Idaho in 2002.

Gem County sheriff's officers say glass jars filled with printer ink were thrown against the stone monument which subsequently soaked several inches into the stone, permanently defacing it. A community reward has swelled to more than $1,000.00 with several Treasure Valley businesses donating money to repair the monument. In response to the donations monument organizer Jim Olson said "The fact that there has been this outpouring is amazing."

Governor Dirk Kempthorne said the vandalism "should anger every Idahoan" and praised the American Legion members for their dedication to the project, applauding the community's and Post 49's determination to repair the damage.

The memorial was originally created by Rock Art who has been chosen to perform the restoration work. Initial estimates of the repair costs were around $3,000.00 but Rock Art agreed to do the work for $1,000.00.

The damage was severe enough it will require removing several inches off the face of the stone, reshaping it and re-carving the inscriptions. Several of the base stones were also damaged and will need to be repaired.

If you have any information about the vandalism to the monument please contact the Gem County sheriff's office in Emmett at 208.365-3521.
